Alex Eala continues her steady rise in the global tennis scene, competing across multiple international tournaments as she takes on higher-ranked opponents and refined key areas of her game. Step into the Filipino tennis sensation’s impressive April to June run, marked with solid tour-level performances, competitive results, and statement wins.
Tough Battle on Clay
As the clay season arrived in April to May, Eala went through a challenging run in European tournaments. Her clay-court campaign included appearances in the Madrid Open, Italian Open, Strasbourg Open, and Roland Garros, highlighted by her notable runs to the Round of 64 in Madrid and Round of 32 in the Italian Open.
She also showed immense strength during her Main Draw appearance at the Strasbourg Open as she competed against Oleksandra Oliynykova. Her clay campaign ended at Roland Garros after falling short 4-6, 2-6 against USA’s Iva Jovic during the singles main draw of the opening match. Despite not advancing to the latter stages, Eala continued to show promise against tough competition.
A Breakthrough Grass Title
Eala capped off a stunning grass-court campaign by clinching the 2026 Birmingham Open title, making it her second WTA 125 win, her first on grass, and her first championship of the 2026 season. She outclassed Czech Republic’s Nikola Bartunkova, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, after a grueling two-hour and 38-minute battle.
After Bartunkova claimed the opening set, Eala gained momentum in the latter sets and remained completely in control of her games. Both players showed tremendous grit until the final set, but Eala took control of the decisive third frame to seal the victory and claim the championship.
This victory made her surge to World No. 33 in the rankings after winning the tournament, marking a significant milestone for the Filipina player. Following her triumph, more games await Alex Eala with other grass tournaments ahead, such as the WTA 125 Berlin Open and WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open, also scheduled in June.
