The 2026 Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix delivered drama from qualifying to the checkered flag, culminating in a commanding victory for George Russell and a significant shake-up in both championship battles.
The weekend took a dramatic turn in Q3 when Max Verstappen crashed at the penultimate corner, bringing out yellow flags during the final flying laps. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, believing double yellow flags had been waved, aborted his lap. Russell, however, correctly identified it as a single yellow flag, slowed through the affected sector, and completed his lap to secure pole position. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton qualified second and third, while Antonelli lined up fourth. Despite his crash, Verstappen still managed fifth on the grid.
Race day proved equally eventful. Antonelli struggled in the opening laps, running wide several times and surrendering a position to Leclerc to avoid a penalty. The Mercedes driver recovered well, however, executing the team’s strategy to perfection and climbing back to finish third.
Up front, Russell controlled the race from lights out, briefly relinquishing the lead only during pit stops. His composed drive secured his first victory since the Australian Grand Prix and vaulted him into second place in the Drivers’ Championship, just 40 points behind teammate Antonelli. Lewis Hamilton slipped to third in the standings.
