The Philippine Men’s National Basketball Team completed Window 2 of Round 1 in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers, hosting New Zealand and Australia at SM Mall of Asia Arena.
Gilas Pilipinas faced New Zealand on February 26 and Australia on March 1 as part of the home-and-away format of the qualifiers. Both games were played in front of the home crowd, but the Philippines dropped both matches.
New Zealand 69, Philippines 66
Gilas Pilipinas erased an 11-point deficit and came within one possession late in the game. Dwight Ramos attempted a three-pointer in the closing seconds that could have tied the score, but the shot missed as New Zealand held on for the win.
Australia 93, Philippines 66
The Philippines stayed within striking distance in the first half and trailed by five points at the break. Australia took control in the second half and built a lead that reached 29 points. Gilas was unable to recover as the Boomers secured the victory.
Despite the losses, Gilas Pilipinas advanced to Round 2 of the qualifiers after Guam finished winless in the group.
The Philippines will play two road games in Window 3 in July, facing New Zealand on July 3 and Australia on July 6. Results from these games will carry over to the next round, making both matches important for the team’s standing.
