Carrying the Philippine flag with pride and determination, two Filipino football teams, men’s U-22 and women’s Filipinas, powered through the 33rd Southeast Asian Games 2025 in Thailand as they represented the nation in football.

U-22’s Resilient Clash to Semifinals

The Philippines’ U-22 men’s football team exploded on the Southeast Asian Games stage, unexpectedly toppling regional powerhouses and surging through the semifinals for the first time after 34 years.

With the dynamic roster of overseas-based pros and homegrown talents, the team dominated the match against their rival countries—Myanmar and Singapore in the Group C match, and Malaysia in the bronze medal match. Key players such as Otu Banatao, Alex Monis, Santiago Rublico, and Sandro Reyes combined timely strikes and fast counterattacks, which stunned opponents and led the scores.

But in a gripping semifinal showdown with Vietnam, the Filipino U-22 booters’ journey came to a disappointing end after a 2-0 defeat at the Rajamangala Stadium last December 15. This loss crushed their hopes for the gold medal yet made history in reaching the semifinals for the first time.

Even without claiming the medal, the team placed fourth in the overall standings in the men’s football tournament. This proved their bursting grit and dedication throughout the game, which drew praise from Filipino fans. Moreover, their performance exceeded expectations and marked an important step forward for the young players.

The First Gold for Filipinas

The Philippines’ women’s football team Filipinas carved another history, as they notched the first-ever gold medal after dethroning Vietnam at the Chonburi Daikin Stadium last December 17, 2025.

They have shown a determined performance from the start against their rivals Myanmar, Malaysia, Vietnam in the Group B match, and Thailand in the semifinals. They consistently kept a competitive game until they reached the finals.

During their final match against Vietnam, players Jael Marie Guy, Alexa Pino, Hali Long, Angie Beard, Ariana Isabella Markey, and Jaclyn Sawicki scored on the tense penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel then made the crucial save on Tran Thi Thu’s final penalty attempt, clinching the gold medal for the Filipinas.

Post-match Impact

The SEA Games 2025 marked a significant milestone for Philippine football after participating teams displayed a great record across the region. The Filipinas won the first gold over an eight-time champion, while the Philippines’ U-22 showed a promising journey through resilience and growth to the semifinals.

With their collective strength and perseverance, both teams elevated the country’s growing presence in regional football and also signaled a bright era ahead of the sport.
