The San Beda Red Lions End a 28-Year Title Drought
An NCAA pioneer, the San Beda Red Lions are now the winningest team in league basketball history. However, that was far from the case entering Season 82 in 2006, when the team was in the midst of a 28-year championship drought.
The Red Lions entered the finals as the team to beat after posting a dominant 13-1 record in the elimination round. Standing in their way were the Philippine Christian University (PCU) Dolphins, who were eager to avenge their Season 81 finals loss. The Dolphins also boasted a talented roster featuring future PBA stars Jason Castro, Gabby Espinas, and Beau Belga.
PCU proved its strength by forcing a winner-take-all Game 3 after dominating San Beda in Game 2. The Dolphins even mounted a fourth-quarter comeback in the deciding game, threatening to complete the upset. However, Samuel Ekwe and Yousif Aljamal stepped up under the leadership of coach Enrico “Koy” Banal to keep the Dolphins at bay.
The Red Lions ultimately escaped with a thrilling 68-67 victory to capture their first championship in nearly three decades. Ekwe was named Season MVP, while Aljamal earned Finals MVP honors.
The San Sebastian Golden Stags Prevent a Four-Peat
San Beda’s 2006 championship marked the beginning of a dominant era. By Season 85 in 2009, the Red Lions were chasing a fourth consecutive title. Their rivals, the San Sebastian Golden Stags, had other plans.
Determined to end their own seven-year championship drought, the Golden Stags finished the elimination round with an impressive 16-2 record. They carried that momentum into the finals, showcasing their resilience by winning Game 1 in double overtime before sealing the championship with a convincing 76-61 victory in Game 2.
Leading the charge was the legendary “Pinatubo Trio” of Calvin Abueva, Ronald Pascual, and Ian Sangalang, guided by head coach Ato Agustin. All would later enjoy successful careers in the PBA, further cementing the team’s place in NCAA history.
The Mapua Cardinals End a 33-Year Title Drought
While San Beda’s 28-year championship drought was remarkable, the Mapua Cardinals endured an even longer wait. For 33 years, the Cardinals searched for another title, coming agonizingly close in Seasons 97 and 99 before falling short against Letran and San Beda.
Those setbacks fueled the Cardinals’ determination heading into the NCAA’s historic 100th season.
Facing the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde Blazers in the finals, Mapua relied on suffocating defense and disciplined offensive execution. The strategy paid off as the Cardinals completed a two-game sweep to secure their first championship since 1991.
The title run was powered by Finals MVP Clint Escamis, leading scorer Cyrus Cuenco, and sharpshooter Lawrence Mangubat. More importantly, the victory served as redemption for head coach Randy Alcantara, who was also a member of Mapua’s last championship team in 1991.
