The FIFA World Cup 2026 officially kicked off across Mexico, Canada, and the United States last June 11 and 12, bringing together the world’s top football nations for the sport’s most prestigious tournament. As teams begin their quest for glory, the stage is set for intense rivalries, unforgettable performances, and history in the making.

A Powerful Start

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 got its ball rolling on the first two days, it already delivered powerful performances from global artists and opening football matches, marking an exciting start to the tournament.

The official opener featured the showdown between Mexico and South Africa, with Mexico delighting the home crowd after a convincing 2-0 victory in a fiery Group A match at Estadio Azteca on June 11. Méxican forward Julián Quiñones scored the first goal, yet the match took a dramatic turn in the second half after both teams received three red cards—two for South Africa and one for Mexico.

Despite the reduced number of players and South Africa’s resilience, Mexico showed dominance throughout the game until Raúl Jiménez secured the second goal, leading to the historic triumph for Mexico.

The Day Two Drama

The following day, June 12, two games were held in Canada and the USA. Canada showcased a dramatic draw 1-1 in their matchup against Bosnia & Herzegovina. Bosnia took the early lead as striker Jovo Lukic scored the first goal after Sead Kolašinac redirected an inswinging corner.

Canada gained control of the match but struggled to score goals during the first half. As the second half approached the 78th minute, Cyle Larin from Canada made a smart pass from Promise David and found the net with a deflected finish to make it 1–1.

The spotlight then shifted to the battle between the USA and Paraguay after the Toronto-based match. The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) opened its campaign with a commanding 4-1 win against Paraguay, racing into a three-goal halftime lead through a Damián Bobadilla own goal and a Folarin Balogun brace.  The match saw Paraguay roaring back through Mauricio in the second half, yet USA’s Giovanni Reyna closed out the match with a stunning late strike that capped off their victory.

Onto the Next Games

The opening matches across the three host countries have set the tone for what’s coming next in the rest of the FIFA World Cup. The United States, Canada, and Mexico have already ignited excitement as World Cup hosts, but the spotlight now shifts to the rest of the field as nations prepare to make their own statements in the battles ahead.

With expectations growing, the coming months will offer a clearer indication of which competing teams are best positioned to capture the championship.
